I’m so deeply honored to be granted the privilege of writing the first – the very first – guest post on this blog, that I am making full use of fall break, spreading out my guest post research notes all over the kitchen table, developing carpal tunnel syndrome, straining my eyes, and finally producing this final masterpiece of literature.

Maybe that’s overstating it a little bit, but you get the picture. This guest post shouldn’t be taken as an actual serious post. Nothing will be gained from reading this. And I should say that I’m a little out of my demographics here. I’m not a married woman with children. So…with that disclaimer…here is my post.

High Flight Society

We had the chance to have a meal with John Packer (far right) of the Christian rock band High Flight Society, and get to know him and his girlfriend Anna. John, his brother, Michael and two other friends formed a band in Cedartown, Georgia and have been hard at work over the last 8 years to build it up. They tour all over the country and when John is not performing he is busy doing graphic design. Their song Sweet Redeemer reached #47 on the CRW Top 100 Rock Songs chart for 2007. Baby Beluga

My husband and I both agree that our favorite song of Raffi's is Baby Beluga. Raffi, was born in Egypt and immigrated to Canada with his family in the late 50's. He ran a coffee house, where he played the guitar. He was asked to play at a school and even though he wasn't sure about it, he did anyway and became an instant hit with kids. He was popular when our oldest two were little, so we have fond memories of his tapes, yes, cassette tapes. All of his songs are great and lots of fun. Baby Beluga will stay with you forever - but in a good, pleasant way.

I was on drill team back in the days of Jr. and Sr. High School and we were given performance demerits for various reasons, one being for not smiling. One of our motto songs was "Smile" and we sang it constantly. Charlie Chaplin wrote the music for it in his 1936 movie Modern Times. You may know the 1954 version by Nat King Cole, it's probably the most popular. It's a great song but can you imagine 50 girls out on a practice field singing it? We sang it so often that I still belt it out when anyone happens to be pouting around here.

I've got older kids in the house and two of them play the acoustic and electric guitar. I'm often exposed to music that otherwise I wouldn't even know about. Some are not for me, but One Republic is a group I really enjoy. They're an American rock band formed in Colorado Springs by Ryan Teddar and high school friend, Zach Filkins. The band's song "Apologize" has sold over 7 million singles worldwide. According to Soundscan it is one of only two songs that have reached three million legal downloads in history and is the 2nd best selling song of the decade.

This CD came out several years ago but it's still one of my favorites. I especially enjoy Remember Your Creator and The Apostle's Creed. Lori's songs are all written based on scripture and she has a nice folksy-soft rock sound that's very easy to listen to. A wonderful way to memorize.

Lori Sealy is the wife of a Presbysterian pastor, mother of two children, living in North Carolina.

Biscaya

My mother and father-in-law introduced me to James Last many years ago. They've taken dance lessons over the years & really enjoy his music. James Last is known as the Gentleman of Music. One of his CDs that I really like is Biscaya: it makes you want to get up and dance whether you know how or not. His music makes it easy. My mother-in-law also likes to listen to it while cleaning or working around the house...and I do too.

It was a simple idea, but it made James Last, born Hans Last in Germany in 1929, hugely successful. He came up with the idea of arranging chart hits in an accessible, big band style and found a massive audience for what turned into an astonishing series of records down the years.

The 5 Browns

The topic of conversation with a friend today was "musically talented families". It brought back to my memory The 5 Browns. Three sisters and two brothers, each a virtuoso concert pianist, who play together. They were born in Texas, moved to Utah, and were homeschooled. They all attended the Juilliard School of Music in New York. Their first album was out in 2005 which took them to the top of the Billboard charts. They've released two more, one in 2006 and one last year.
